LESSON: SUNITA WILLIAM IN SPACE
TLO
1. To know the challenging
concept of the shape of the
earth and gravitation.
2. To understand about space
ship
3. To know about Sunita
Williams and her experience
in the space
4. To know about Nature and
earth
SOME IMPORTANT FACTS
1- In 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon.
2- In 2007, Sunita Williams set a new record for the longest space flight by a
women.
3- We see stars mostly at night.
4- Stars can be seen twinkling.
5- A shining object which seems to move with a constant speed in the sky can
be a satellite.
6- A shooting star is actually a meteorite which catches fire when it enters the
earth’s atmosphere.
Answer the following questions:
Ans- The earth is round like a globe but we do not fall off because of the pull of
earth.
Q2. Do people in Argentina stand upside down?
Ans- People in Argentina and India stand upside down in relation to each
other. There is no ‘up’ and ‘down’ on the earth, it is relative.
Q3. Can you think why Sunita’s hair kept standing?
Q4. Why does water flows downwards on any slope. On mountains too water
flows downwards, not upwards.
Ans- Water flows downwards, not upwards on any slope or mountains because
of the pull of earth.
Q5. Draw the phases of moon in your notebook.
Q6. What are the festivals related to the moon?
Ans- Following are the festivals related to the moon:
1- Diwali
2- Holi
- Dusshera
4- Janamashtami (dark fortnight)
5- Ganesh Chaturthi (4th day of first fortnight)
6- Guruparb
7- Raksha Bandhan
8- Eid-Ul-Fitr
9- Hemis (religious festival of Ladakh on 10th day of Tibetan lunar calendar)
10- Shivratri / Gurupurnima/ Budhpurnima
Q7. Why did Sunita Williams want to become a school teacher?
Ans- Sunita Williams wanted to become a school teacher so that she could
make children understand how science and math are closely linked to our
lives.
Q8. Why do children always slide down the slide and not slide up? If this slide
were there in Sunita’s spacecraft, would children slide like this?
Ans- Children always slide down the slide and not slide up because of the
earth’s pull.
If this slide were there in Sunita’s spacecraft, children would not slide like this
because of the absence of gravitational pull.
Q9. WRITE ABOUT SUNITA EXPERIENCE IN THE SPACE?
2. she spent 6 months in space.
3. eating, drinking, combing hair was very difficult.
4. she was not able to stay in one place in the space craft.
5. to sleep or to write she had to tie herself to the chair or to the bed.
6. water floats around as blobs. To wash face or hand she had to catch these
blobs and wet paper with them.
Q10. what is the difference between a star ,shooting star and satellite?
Ans. Star :- a star can be seen twinkling in the sky.
Shooting star :- a shooting star is a meteorite which catches fire when it enter
the earth’s surface.
Satellite :- a shining object which seems to move with a constant speed in the
sky is a satellite.,

Q. Collect information about space researchers or collect the pictures of space
crafts.
- Sunita Williams was born on September 19, 1965 at Ohio, United
States. She is an American Indian Astronaut. Being an Indian origin Sunita is
one among the four astronauts picked by NASA to train for a program which
will one day land on Mars.
she was the first Indian- American astronaut and the first Indian
woman to go into space. she first flew in 1997 on the space shuttle coloumbia.
She served on the shuttle as of mission specialist and the main person sleeping
the shuttle’s robotic arms. She was one of the seven astronauts who lost their
lives in the space shuttle coloumbia disaster on February 1.2003.
Q why de we float in space?
Ans. Astronauts float around in space because there is no gravity in space.
