Ans.  People in ancient times used to come to the stepwell with pots and containers to fill them with water. They would walk down the steps, and when they reached the water, they would fill their pots and take the water back up to their homes.

Stepwell is a different form of well. Here many steps go down several storeys deep to reach at the water, instead of drawing the water up from the well, the people could go down the steps to reach the water.
